  1. July

    Meet the Griffins
    1 July - 30 September

    An exhibition of the lives and work of Walter Burley Griffin and Marion Mahoney Griffin. The couple’s winning entry for the design of Australia’s capital took them from their native Chicago to Australia where they made their home for 20 years. During this time WB Griffin was commissioned to design the new towns of Griffith and Leeton. Meet the Griffins showcases unique material on loan from the National Library of Australia. The exhibition, on show from 1 July until 30 September, will be launched at Griffith City Library at 7pm by world authority, James Weirick (UNSW), The University of Western Australia.     Grounded in Griffith - Exhibition
    23 July - 7 August

    Grounded in Griffith is an exploration into some of the unique stories of local families by primary school students. The exhibition celebrates the centenary of Griffith as a culturally diverse community in a unique environment. Opens Friday 8 July at Griffith Regional Art Gallery, closes Sunday 7 August.     Official Birthday Celebrations - 100 TODAY!
    Happy Birthday Griffith! Enjoy a nostalgic morning in the theatre in the presence of His Excellency General the Honourable David Hurley, Governor of New South Wales, and Mrs Hurley. The 100 year celebrations will acknowledge our pioneers and reminisce about days gone by. You will enjoy a historical screening, music and entertainment, we will conclude with a light lunch in the foyer, catering by Griffith CWA and Bertoldo's birthday cake.
    $10 Tickets, (People 90 years or older are free, but require a ticket for catering and seating purposes).

    If people wish to register someone 90 years plus to receive an official invitation, please email their name and postal address to visitgriffith@griffith.com.au and an invitation will be posted out. Please note you do not need an invitation in order to arrange a ticket to attend this event.

    City Highlights Tour

    Jump onboard the bus and see first-hand the growth of the City and learn more about the recent multi-million dollar investments and planning developments with Manager Tourism and Economic Development Greg Lawrence. Local historian, John Robinson will also be onboard to provide historical facts and stories. The tour includes a tasting stop at Riverina Grove.

    Departs from the Theatre at 2pm. Cost $15pp. Book your seat at the Griffith Visitor Information Centre 1800 681 141. Returns to Theatre at 4.30pm.

    Tree Planting Ceremony with the Governor of New South Wales

    The Honourable David Hurley AC DSC (Ret'd), Governor of NSW will officially open Griffith Centenary Walk with a ceremonial tree planting at IOOF Park, Kookora Street, from 2.30pm-3pm.

    Heritage Train Rides - the Tin Hare returns to Griffith 4-7 August

     Sit back, relax and take in the scenery in style aboard the Tin Hare - an authentic Motor Rail Heritage train from Lachlan Valley Rail. Operating various short shuttles to Yenda and Tharbogang, Thursday, Friday and Saturday, tickets start from $15. For a longer ride, why not book a seat on the dinner train to Leeton, with a fabulous boxed-dinner from O'Donnell's, train departs Griffith station at 6.30pm and returns at 8.40pm. Or take the lunch train to Ardlethan on Sunday for a lovely day out in the country, with lunch at the new Ardlethan Bowling Club.  There is also a return day trip from Narrandera, stopping at Leeton to Griffith on Saturday to encourage our neighbouring towns to share our Saturday festivities.     Grounded in Griffith Celebration - join the Gallery team on Thursday evening from 6pm, with a special viewing of the Grounded in Griffith exhibition. This is a lovely collection of pioneering stories and memories as captured by local primary school students and illustrated through mixed media. Canapes and refreshments will be served. Griffith Regional Art Gallery, 167 Banna Avenue.

    The Griffith Collection - Griffith Central and Griffith Genealogical & Historical Society will display historical photographs from The Griffith Collection in the Griffith Central Shopping Centre on the first 3 weekends of August; 3rd to 7th, 10th to 14th and 17th to 21st August, Wednesday to Sunday mornings from 10 am, and on Saturday afternoons. Griffith Central, 10-12 Yambil Street, Griffith. 

     

     
  3. August 5

    Friday Regional Tour

    Tour the regions largest winery, Casella Family Brands (home of Yellow Tail wines) and Australian Beer Company, followed by BBQ lunch and tour at Catania Fruit Salad Farm. Tour departs from the Visitor Centre at

    9am and returns at 3.30pm.

    Launch of the Centenary Sculptures

    Seven hand-crafted granite sculptures will be officially launched. A gift to the City of Griffith, through the generous support of many businesses, organisations and local families. Admire the sculptures and enjoy the fun and festivities with live music, entertainment, various food stalls and a fabulous fireworks display. $ Free, food available to purchase

    Steggles 2016 Street Party & Parade

    Griffith will bring back the ‘good old days’ when residents and visitors take to Banna Avenue in the biggest street party and parade the city has ever seen! The Steggles 2016 Street Party and Parade will be vibrant and exciting and will include decorated floats, vintage cars and machinery, marching bands and plenty of entertainment. Join us after the parade for the incredible street party which features entertainment on the Casella Family Brands Stage including local acts as well as Australian music sensation Adam Harvey, and up and coming group Lepers and Crooks.     Heritage Train from Narrandera & Leeton to Griffith

    Departs Narrandera at 8.05am, Leeton at 8.40am and arrives in Griffith at 9.30am in time for the commencement of the Street Parade and festivities. Departs Griffith at 4pm, returning to Leeton at 5.05pm and Narrandera at 5.50pm.

    Sunday Regional Tour

    Departs the Visitor Centre at 9am and heads south of Griffith to Southern Cotton, for a tour of the state-of-the-art ginning facility at Whitton. Lunch and walk at the beautiful Careri garden, 'Rosewood on Stokes', followed by a visit and tour of McWilliam's Wines, the first winery in the region. Return to the Visitor Centre at 3pm.

    Centenary Exhibition at Pioneer Park Museum

    Spend a day at the Museum learning about our early history. You’ll enjoy the 1800's walking exhibits, Bagtown exhibition, the arrival of water to Griffith, recollections from pioneering families and 100 years of Griffith local sporting memorabilia!
